Burbage Surgery

Here at Burbage Surgery, we have decided that we will not be taking part in the national strike action you will have heard about. We believe that although there has been and continues to be very significant financial and workload pressure on general practice; we do not believe this is the right thing for our practice to be doing at this time. We will therefore be functioning as normal throughout any industrial action.

There are clear issues that do need addressing in general practice and the health care system in general. Funding for general practice as a proportion of NHS funding continues to fall, and we believe that a well-supported general practice should be the fundamental building block of any health care system. Supporting people throughout their lives, ensuring good health, and preventing illness is always better than treating it once it arises. Especially as the population is not only getting older but is becoming more unhealthy, and therefore the number of people with long term health conditions continues to increase.

There are 26 million people with long term health conditions, and this will likely increase by 2.5 million in the next 15 years. This is important as people with chronic conditions account for 50% of all GP appointments, 70% of hospital beds and 70% of the health and social care budget.

So, what can we all do?

Speak to your MP about supporting general practice and not just primary care networks and hospitals.

We can all try and be healthier, eat better, sleep better, exercise, reduce alcohol and stop smoking.

Support your local surgery however you can, and we will be here for you when you need us.

Thank you

Dr James Downie

Cervical Screening

We’re encouraging anyone who has received an invitation for cervical screeningto book their appointmennow. The NHS Cervical Screening Programme savethousands of lives every year by checking for high-risk Human Papillomavirus (HPV),a group of viruses that cause nearly all cervical cancers. High-risk HPV testing (performed at your cervical screening) is a more sensitive and accurate test than the previous method and is the best way to find out who is at higher risk of developing the cervical cell changes that over time could potentially lead to cervical cancer.Even if you've been vaccinated against HPV, it's still important that you attend your cervical screening appointment when invitedCombined with the HPV vaccine, cervical screening could make cervical cancer a thing of the past. Every screening we do is potentially saving a life. If you missed your last cervical screening, book an appointment with one of our lovely nurses now it is not too late and we are here to support you. If you’ve received your invitation, call us to book as soon as possible.

Carers Information

Burbage Surgery has once again been awarded the Platinum Carers Award in recognition of the outstanding services and support provided to Carers. This is a combined award from Wiltshire Investors in Carers and Carers Support Wiltshire.  We offer "flexible" appointments for people who are Carers to try to make it easier for you to visit your GP/Nurse.

Are you a Carer?

A Carer is anyone who cares, unpaid, for a family member or friend who could not always manage without their support.

A Young Carer is a child between 5 & 16 who looks after or helps to look after someone who has an illness, learning or physical disability, a mental health illness or misuse of drugs or alcohol. It might be your mum or dad, grandparent, brother or sister or a close relative or friend. A Young Carer usually takes on practical and/or emotional caring responsibilities that would normally be expected of an adult. This means doing things like cooking, cleaning, shopping, giving medication or just talking and helping when the person you care about is feeling sad.

The Surgery can help support you, offer advice and direct you to other organisations like Carer Support Wiltshire who can help.
